Butterfly & Insect Museum
The World of Butterflies, Moths, Insects and Arachnids
Butterflies and beetles, in all the colors of the rainbow, will fascinate young and old!
Some of the largest, most colorful, and most unusual insects can be seen in Jim Nutting’s collection of worldwide insects.
Jim has been collecting butterflies and insects since he was five. To best showcase their beauty, Jim builds stained glass cases to display his collections. He creates lifelike natural settings, selecting glass colors to complement the insect tones and heighten the visual effect.
From the iridescent blue Morpho butterflies and dinner plate-sized bird-eating spiders of the jungles of Peru to the huge birdwing Ornithopter butterflies and foot-long walking sticks of Papua New Guinea.
A unique aspect of the Butterfly & Insect Museum is Jim’s attempts at raising Saturnid moths. Examples such as the native Luna, Polyphemus and Cecropia moths as well as a few exotic species can be seen on display.
When you visit the museum, you’ll never know what you may encounter!
Licensed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife to keep and exhibit live tarantulas, scorpions, and other exotic invertebrates, Jim has imported and sourced creatures both locally and worldwide. Caterpillars busily munching on birch leaves, a praying mantis stalking a fruit fly or cricket, or perhaps you will be lucky enough to catch a giant Atlas moth emerging from its cocoon.
While here, don’t forget to ask about the vast collection of seashells just around the corner from the butterflies!
